Mad Sheep: The true story behind the USDA's war on a family farm by Linda Faillace.

Eatwild founder Jo Robinson recently heard author Linda Faillace speak at an American Grassfed Association Conference. Jo wants you to to be able to hear Linda's story as well.

Linda and her family wanted to breed sheep and make cheese on their small Vermont farm. They did the research, worked hard, followed the rules, and, after years of preparation and patience, built a successful, entrepreneurial business. Then their dream turned into a nightmare. The U.S. Department of Agriculture told them that the sheep they had imported from Europe carried a disease called scrapie that was similar to the dreaded BSE or “mad cow disease.”

After months of surveillance (which included USDA agents hiding behind bushes and spying from nearby mountaintops) armed federal agents seized their flock. The animals were destroyed and the Faillace’s lives turned upside down—all so that the USDA could show the U.S. meat industries that they were protecting America from mad cow disease—and by extension, easing fears among an increasingly wary population of meat-eaters.

Never mind that the imported sheep had been quarantined and certified by European union authorities as having never consumed slaughterhouse waste. Never mind that these animals had been tested for scrapie and found healthy. Never mind that U.S. corporate agribusiness was following many of the same practices that had led to the spread of Mad Cow disease in Europe, i.e., feeding animals, including household pets, billions of pounds of blood, slaughterhouse waste, animal fat and tainted manure every year. The Faillace's sheep had become the scapegoats.

Read this book. It will make you mad, but wiser.
If this were a novel, you probably wouldn't believe it. But the story of a Vermont farming family driven out of business by a government agency is true—and truly frightening...—Booklist
